If you often spend money on advertising in local papers and magazines, and wonder how you are able to reach your existing customers better, you should consider offering your customers the opportunity to sign up for a weekly/monthly newsletter.
Take for instance the local butcher around the corner.
A large segment of his repeat customers comes into his shop once a week/month whey they have a special occasion planned and want high quality meat without worrying about the extra cost. But what does the butcher do when he wants these customers to come into his shop more often to do their day-to-day meat purchases.
He does have the possibility to send out flyers or place ads in his local paper, but this is expensive and does not guarantee that he reaches his target audience.
What he should do is to create a newsletter service on his website, this way his customers are able to sign up directly on his website to receive his weekly/monthly newsletter. All the butcher has to do now is to create a newsletter template once featuring his logo and some text (this could very well be a nice list of recipes for a full weeks cooking). On the side he can then put in a series of nice pictures and offers for the week.
By doing this the butcher receives a number of advantages but first and foremost he reaches his target audience directly with very targeted advertising allowing him to hopefully create more responsive repeat business.
One great way for him to get his customers to notice the newsletter is to put a small flyer featuring his website and a sign-up area into every bag he hands over the counter to his customers in the store. He should also have a print copy of the newsletter on his counter for the customers that does not wish to receive the newsletter (these may very well like the recipes and come back to purchase his goods)
Of course this is not only a good idea for the local butcher, all retail stores will be able to get a lot of positive response using newsletters.
